Motorists take a defensive driving or accident prevention course for many different reasons: including insurance discounts, traffic point reductions, court requirements, or just as a refresher for good driving skills. There are many different courses available, which include the traditional classroom and also online courses. A defensive driving course can help you save money and reduce points on your driving record.
Must be approved by the New York State DMV
Don't just sign up for any old defensive driving course! It is important to keep in mind that the defensive driving or accident prevention course that you select is approved by the NY State Department of Motor Vehicles. The course you take must be specific to New Yorkers and focuses on New York state traffic laws.
No Classroom Required
Life is busy enough for most people. Driving to and sitting through a course is not desirable to many people. Fortunately, there are many courses available that are 100% online, so you don't have to deal with traffic or waste time riding public transportation. Online courses can be more convenient for many people.
Reduction of Points on Your Driving Record
A common reason that drivers choose to a defensive driving course is to reduce points on their driving record. Taking a defensive driving course will give you credit of up to 4 points, but only for tickets that you have already received. Therefore, if you have a 4 point ticket before you take the course, and no other tickets, the course will reduce your point accumulation to 0 points.
Mandatory 10% Insurance Reduction for 3 Years
Reducing the car insurance costs is a big reason why many people take a defensive driving course. After you complete the course, you will receive a mandatory car insurance discount for 3 years. This is a 10% reduction of your liability, no-fault and collision premiums. Your discount is awarded on your current policy. Once the 3 years are up, it is time to take another course to keep getting the discount.
Where To Find Courses
Both classroom and online courses that are approved by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles are available on their website.
Bring Us Your Certificate
After you complete the course, please bring us the original course completion certification. We will make a copy and then add the discount to your policy effective for the date of completion as specified on the certificate.
