One moment you are driving down the road peacefully and listening to your favorite music, just relaxing and enjoying your drive. Before you know it, you hear a sudden bang on your windshield and a crack magically appears. Your first instinct is to scream or curse, whichever you prefer. Let's face it. We all drive a lot and a cracked windshield is bound to happen sooner or later.

There are many reasons why this might happen - a small rock that came off the road and hit your car, a loose grain of sand that bounced off a construction truck, or even a stick that fell off of a tree.

Getting your windshield fixed or replaced is necessary. You can be pulled over for a driving violation if your windshield is cracked and obstructing your driving view. Fixing your windshield is something that needs to be done. But will your insurance company pay for this or is it something you have to pay out of your own pocket?

Will my auto insurance cover the cost of replacing my windshield?Picture of car with cracked windshield

The answer here depends on the coverage that you have with your insurance policy. If you purchased comprehensive coverage with glass coverage, then you will be able to claim for windshield damages. Beware that only comprehensive coverage is not enough! You need to choose comprehensive WITH glass coverage when insuring your car. Coverage usually requires for the repair costs to go beyond the deductible amount. Deductible amounts can range from zero to the thousands. If you have deductible of $0, which is called full glass coverage, then you will owe nothing for your windshield replacement!

If you only have the minimum liability coverage on your vehicle, you will not be covered for windshield replacement and will have to pay for it out-of-pocket.

How do I file a claim to have my windshield replaced?

If your insurance policy allows you to claim the costs associated with the windshield replacement, the next step is to contact us or your insurance company directly to have it replaced. There are generally two options here. The first option is for us to call the claims department of your insurance company and give them your vehicle information. The dominant windshield replacement company is Safelite, which is who most insurance companies will use. Whenever we can, we utilize local replacement services through Hudson Valley Auto Glass. They provide exceptional service, as we have been told by many clients.

In either case, you will receive a phone call from the repair service. They will take your information and make an appointment with you to fix your windshield. Both services offer mobile auto glass repair. That's right, they will come to your house and repair your windshield. No need to go to a shop to have it fixed.
