Several life insurance companies today offer life insurance with no upfront medical exam, up to certain death benefit limit. At the time of application, you are not required to undergo a medical exam until the company requests one. A life insurance medical exam generally requires you to give blood and a urine specimen, have blood pressure taken, have height and weight measured, and answer many medical questions from the exam vendor. It can be a great option if you are in excellent health and not looking for a large amount of death benefit. But, you need to qualify first. No medical exam does NOT mean that you don't have to take a medical exam. The company certainly has the right to request one and will deny your application if you refuse. Not everyone qualifies as well. Several reasons why you might not qualify include age, your height and weight combination, certain medical conditions (asthma, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc.), regularly engage in certain risky activities (such as skydiving), abuse alcohol and drugs, and you haven't seen your doctor recently or have never seen a doctor.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of life insurance companies in New York have tightened their requirements and will no longer sell a life insurance policy without a medical exam. Other companies will not sell policy with a death benefit greater than a certain amount without a medical exam. One of our major life insurance companies offers a no exam life policy for death benefits under $250,000. Over that amount, every applicant is required to take a medical exam.
